After taking charge as the president of the United States (US) in 2017, Donald Trump began focusing upon ending American military entanglements around the globe. After all, this was one of the major slogans of his election campaign that helped him to ascend to the presidency. To implement it, Trump administration proceeded to end the longest fought American war overseas – Afghanistan.
The war in Afghanistan started in 2001 when the US began a military campaign against Taliban government & Al Qaida in retaliation to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Since then, the war has resulted in 157,000 civilian deaths along with 2,400 US military casualties, and it has cost approximately US $2 trillion to the US exchequer. In order to mitigate the destruction of war and to strengthen Afghan government, $141 billion have been sanctioned by the US congress, the amount would mainly be spent upon reconstruction and vitalizing Afghan security forces.
